American Mah Jongg Sydney Inc is a not-for-profit club run by volunteers. Every dollar we raise beyond our running costs is donated to charity, so every lesson, card and event you join helps a good cause as well as growing the game we love.

Learn American Mah Jongg
New to the game? Our beginner lessons are designed to take you from “what’s a Crak?” to confidently building a hand in three easy sessions.
- 3 x 2.5-hour lessons over 3 consecutive weeks
- $120 for the course, plus a National Mah Jongg League card ($30)
- Small groups, taught by our experienced committee of instructors
- Perfect if you’ve heard people talk about “American Mahjong” or “Mahjongg” and want to finally learn it according to the National Mah Jongg League Rules.
American Mah Jongg Cards
Every player needs a current National Mah Jongg League Card to play American Mah Jongg (Yes!, this is the version with the card that changes every year — different to traditional Chinese Mahjong).
New cards are released each year in April, and we help subscribers order their card.
Online card sales are coming soon — we’re setting up a shop on this site so you’ll be able to order your American Mah Jongg Card through us.

Subscribers can join our AMJS WhatsApp group to hear about weekly games happening around the Eastern Suburbs — a friendly, casual way to keep your game sharp between lessons.
Tournaments & Retreats
Once we’re up and running, keep an eye out for American Mah Jongg tournaments and weekend-away retreats — a great excuse to sharpen your game, meet other players, and raise money for charity while you’re at it.

All three! “Mah Jongg” is the traditional spelling used by the National Mah Jongg League for the American game, “Mahjong” is the most common general spelling, and “Mahjongg” is another accepted variant. They all refer to the same game - American Mah Jongg Sydney Inc uses all three so you can find us however you search.
American Mah Jongg is a rummy-style tile game played with a set of 152 tiles and a card of winning hands that’s updated every year by the National Mah Jongg League Inc. It’s different from traditional Chinese Mahjong, though the two share the same tile-matching roots.
We’re a not-for-profit club. All profits are donated to charity, with beneficiaries nominated at the end of each financial year.
$120 for a 3-week beginner course (3 x 2.5-hour sessions), plus $30 for your National Mah Jongg League Card. All profits are donated to charity.
